History of the Cup
|
The Cumberland Cup is a replica of the cup given in 1781 by the founder of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, the Duke of Cumberland, for racing on the River Thames. Initially replicas of the original Cumberland Cup were made and presented to the winners on a regular basis
The replica cup, shown here, was made by Sebastian Garrard in 1912 and was discovered recently. It was purchased by three Flag Officers of the Club and presented for this International Yacht Club Contest. It is intended to be a perpetual trophy.
